Unconditional offers withdrawn, conditional ones issued. Is this legal?
Apr 2020My daughter was made unconditional offers by two universities and she was waiting to attend open days before making a final decision, which unfortunately did not go ahead due to COVID-19. These two universities have subsequently withdrawn their unconditional offers and issued her with conditional ones instead. Is this legal? I know another student who accepted their unconditional offer before the COVID-19 outbreak still has the offer, and my daughter has not missed the decision deadline.
A legal contract will only come into effect when an offer is accepted. So, as she hasn't yet accepted the unconditional offers, they can be withdrawn. The broader context is the OfS has outlawed pre-results unconditional offers this year and so the universities are probably responding to that.
