Course summary
• This Pathway includes all the core subjects currently required for a qualifying law degree, while giving you the opportunity to specialise in law and technology and gain digital lawyering skills that are critical to the changing global economy and workplace. • Employers are increasingly seeking out professionals who are well-versed in both law and the rapidly changing world of technology; this course is designed to give you the competitive edge in this market. • We offer our own Professional Legal Practice (SQE Pathway) LLM so you can apply to stay at Surrey for your masters and benefit from the familiar teaching environment.• You’ll have the option to take one of our award-winning Professional Training placements that will develop your professional skills and networks.
What you will studyOur Law and Technology Pathway will enable you to understand rapidly changing technological developments and market conditions around the world, while drawing on your legal knowledge and analytical skills to solve complex problems. You’ll gain a deep understanding of the main areas of legal knowledge, including law as it:• regulates the functions of the state (public law and criminal law) • regulates relations between private individuals (contract law and tort law), and • regulates the ownership and control of land and other property (land law, and equity and trusts). In addition to these core subjects, after the first year you will immerse yourself in the ways that technology is shaping and improving the practice of law, and how the law must evolve to keep pace with technological change. You will learn how to evaluate the law, analyse its application in given situations and apply your legal understanding in a national or international context. We also provide a series of employability training seminars, digital lawyering and pro bono opportunities and extracurricular activities focusing on client interviewing, negotiation and mooting.
